    Why I’m moving to Darien.

I had a lot of favorite parts from Emma’s event here yesterday evening. Skip to 42:25 to hear a gentleman ask if she’s ever considered dyeing her hair brunette and then she polls the audience!

Book Tour Event # I’ve Lost Track: Darien Library

I couldn’t have written Laura Lamont with the Margaret Herrick Library in Los Angeles, and specifically, without the help of their librarians, and so I was really, really excited to do an event at a library. Darien has chosen Laura Lamont at their inaugural First Look Darien selection, and there were representatives of scores of incredible book clubs in the audience. Lots of the women were wearing leopard-print clothing, which made me feel right at home, and we all were fast friends by the end of the night. Looking good, Connecticut.

Emma is going to be a really difficult act to follow for our new First Look: Darien debut novelist series.

What’s your biggest procrastination tool? Or are you a freak who never procrastinates? Freak!
The aforementioned Internet. And the snacks. And who else is going to sing all those songs to my cats, if not me?

“The idea that she was married still seemed like a great big joke, a fiction she was able to pull over her head like an oversize sweater.”—Emma Straub, Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures

We are already so over the fact that it’s Tuesday and it’s rainy and it’s the day after a triumphant three-day-weekend. However, it is the official publication date of Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures and that is something to feel VERY excited about. Emma Straub will be here October 22.

Breaking news: I just sold my second novel to Riverhead. It’s called The Good Face, and it takes place on a family vacation over two weeks in Mallorca, Spain. You may remember the family in question from Other People We Married— Franny Post, the matriarch of the Post family, appears in three of the stories. Really can’t wait for all of you to find out what they’ve been up to. 2014!

You should definitely see Emma Straub at Darien Library October 22 so you can say you knew her when.

  8. Author to Tour with The Magnetic Fields

    riverheadbooks:

    openbookstore:

Novelist Emma Straub will tour with rock band, The Magnetic Fields this November as an opening act. Straub will be reading original pieces and selections from her novel during her act.

If more bands booked openers like this, I’d start going to shows a lot more often again! ^KE

    (MediaBistro)

    Rockstar authors!!!!!

Let me do the math. Emma Straub will be here Monday, October 22 to celebrate her book Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures. She’ll be opening for The Magnetic Fields on Thursday, November 15.

I’m going to go ahead and pretend that Darien Library is opening for Emma who is then opening for The Magnetic Fields so it’s sort of like we’re associated. Kind of. At least I know what music to play as folks trickle in for her event.

  10. Hello! Just checking in to say that I’m knee-deep in Emma Straub’s Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures, coming out this September. I’m already scheming to get her to the Library.
Her debut novel describes the life of Elsa Emerson, the youngest of three sisters in Door County, Wisconsin in 1920. Her family owns and operates a community playhouse, where she gets her first taste of the stage at a young age.
The rest of the novel follows Elsa’s life as she transitions from blonde to brunette and from Elsa Emerson to Laura Lamonte. She marries in a fever, moves to Hollywood, and begins her career as an actress with a popular film studio. After describing the book to my mom, she said, “Oh like that Judy Garland movie A Star is Born!” So…kind of like that I think? I’ll have to watch the movie and let you know.
