Appy Hour: Nextdoor
This is one of those apps whose success will ride on its adoption, so I want to help spread the word because I love the idea. It’s a social network but before you uggh, let me tell you that it has a twist. It’s a private social network for your neighborhood. Before you can even sign up, they verify your address using either the billing address on your debit card or mobile phone, your home phone number, or (the route I chose) by sending you a postcard with a verification code. Once you’re registered, you can easily interact with your neighbors.
This app can be used to organize a community yard sale, learn the names of neighbors, ask for recommendations of babysitters, find someone to water your plants, and so much more!
Five of the top city governments have also chosen to use the service to communicate with their constituents: New York, Houston, Dallas, San Diego, and San Jose.
More information can be found here.
Every Thursday afternoon, we feature an app handpicked by our staff.
