Behind the Tumblr: the LJ/SLJ Story →
Third is the Darien Library Tumblr, an excellent example of how a public library can take Tumblr by storm. Darien does a great job of taking pictures of all of their wide-ranging events, leavening library promotion with a heaping dose of humor and the occasional gif.

WatchWatch
Cooooool new thing: on Monday, we got new scanners on our self-checks that are capable of reading barcodes on smartphones. This means you can now use your phone to check out books (and magazines and DVDs, etc)! Learn more in the video above. Besides being convenient, using your phone to check out a book is a fun “oh man we almost live in the future” moment. Highly recommended.

A Professional Assessment of Twilight Sparkle as a... →
The hero of the tale is Twilight Sparkle, the librarian of Ponyville and the protagonist of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. She is undoubtedly intelligent, considerate and brave. But is she, from a professional’s point of view, an effective librarian? What follows is an assessment of her in that capacity. This summer, I met a teenage boy who identified himself as a “brony.” I...

– Ruta Sepetys,  BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY. Just finished this to prepare for an interview with the author. It was incredible. For fans of history and memoir, this novel about a Lithuanian family taken by the Soviets during WWII is uncompromisingly real and beautifully written. It was one of those books...

The Darien Fire Department is helping pump out the Darien Library basement Sunday afternoon. There is so much water in it “you could swim in there,” one firefighter told The Darien Times. In honor of our water-logged start to this week, I present to you some of my favorite Under the Sea movies and books: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea The Abyss Titanic Sphere The Little Mermaid
